mailHappy Bucks and Feedback

We hope you enjoy this week's meeting.  We also welcome any contribution ("Happy Bucks") you may wish to give to assist us with continuing programs such as this.
Here are comments/feedback from our 17 January meeting on health and nutrition:

-Nutrition is always an interesting topic. Being a vegetarian in Alaska is a bit of a challenge at times but our produce has improved vastly over the past 35 years. I also attended the Nome Rotary on the 20th (I had the veggie omelette).
-Thought the rotary involvement with first harvest was very interesting. I did not hear of it before and it is right in my backyard.
The talk on physical fitness had some interesting points. Especially since many schools now are dropping physical education requirements. It is going to continue to be a problem building the mental strength to maintain some form of physical fitness.
-Reminded me that exercise and foods we choose to eat are important - and many people make New Year's resolutions around these items. I always consider the time from the Roman New Year on January 1 until the beginning of the Chinese New Year (this year February 8) as a time to reflect and make choices and decisions!  For me it seems these days before Spring truly begins don't belong to either the old or the new year!  The Spring equinox, "our spring" is really the midpoint of spring in March.  So here I am deciding how to close out winter and begin spring and a new life cycle!  And to celebrate the year of the monkey!
-Good TED talk.  I totally agree about diets.  I put on substantial weight in the military and it was easy at first to take it off by dieting.  But then I noticed that I seemingly put on weight just by LOOKING at food.  I know I'm big and fat, but I try to eat a balanced diet (including the beer and alcohol that I've consumed all my life) and (knock on wood!) I haven't had a cold, the flu or any other sickness or fever in close to 10 years.  Similarly, I go to the beach virtually everyday--largely for the fresh air--and try to stay active.  Most of my friends go to the gym almost everyday or run 5 or 10 miles a day.  Many of them are dead or on operating tables getting surgery for the body parts they've damaged.  I'm not afraid to walk, but not at a Gestapo pace.  This works for me, but it's different for every person's system.
