30 year anniversary of women in Rotary
100 year anniversary of the Rotary Foundation
150 year anniversary of the treaty for the purchase of Russian Alaska

How good it was to see some of our eClub members face-to-face, and catch up with old Rotarian friends.  Understandably, not everyone was able to attend.  The eClub had a great morning meeting!  While President Julie was unable to attend do to some other commitments, Past-President George conducted the meeting well (I think he’s done this gavel-passing before).  President-Elect Sharon put in some personal touches – like pin choice, and “coffee & cake” that made the meeting feel festive and special.   Many thanks to those who made the logistics and set-up happen!  Also, our Friendship Table looked great!

Among the awards/pinnings at the meeting were:
Sue Foley Volunteer Award to Doran Powell
Foundation Giving Challenge (to the club!) for 100% of the members contributing (Good job, Foundation Chair, Sharon!)
Paul Harris+6 (+7 even?) for Sharon and Al Durtka
Paul Harris 1 for Brian Shimek and Floyd Shilanski
Paul Harris Society recognition for Wanda Cooksey, George Frushour, and Sharon and Al Durtka
Major Donor Recognition for Tom Nicolos
49 years of perfect attendance to Leo Rasmussen
Officer pins for the incoming board
Passing of the gavel from Julie (George) to President-Elect Sharon

Many thanks to all who attended, including special and honored guests Nancy Nicolos, Pat Frushour, and Al Durtka; our eClub mentors Marty Metiva and Terri Hall; our DG, DGE, AG, multiple PDG, club presidents, and fine individuals all around.
A discussion on RI legislation on Monday, 4/10/17

If you did not receive the email message, passed along to us from our District Governor Michelle O'Brien:

Dear Presidents and Fellow Rotarian Leaders,

We thought it would be an opportune time for our District to have a very direct conversation regarding the developments regarding Rotary International's recent policy making decision regarding guns and gun events and their role in our organization.

I, and others,  have received a tremendous amount of feedback regarding this issue.  As your District Governor, I understand the paramount role that guns/weapons play in the lives of many Alaskans and Canadians in terms of lifestyle, subsistence, livelihood, and more. As a former military member, and avid hunter, I assure you that I personally understand your concerns, but I also understand the need to hear all sides.  With that being said, this is our opportunity to learn, and to have our thoughts heard.

Rather than rely on hearsay, rumors, or otherwise, let's cut to the chase and have a conversation about the why, who, when, and what regarding this new policy.  I thank our RI Director, Dean, for suggesting this interactive forum.

I would recommend that due to our Go To Meeting limitations, that you invite interested club members to join you in a central location to engage this conversation.  We will also record it for those that may be unable to attend.

Due to the possible large number of attendees we ask that you submit questions to Janine Becka in advance @ jbecka@gci.net, no later than Sunday, April 9th at 5 PM.  We WILL NOT BE FILTERING questions, but simply organizing them.  We will put duplicate questions together.

Rotary International is interested in hearing our thoughts, and this is a great forum for collecting those thoughts.  Specifically, it occurs to me that we might be able to offer insight into the areas of membership, retention, public relations, fundraising for the Foundation, and the like in regards to this issue.

So, let's get together and offer good constructive commentary on an issue that is very clearly important to our District.
