August 24th- Greetings and Happiness

Happy Thursday (evening) to you all in the eClub world!

I hope to hear and see you all this Saturday morning, August 26, at 8:00am Alaska time.  As is customary, please bring your webcam.  Coffee, pastries and the buffet are self-service.  Log-in information is below. If board members would kindly stay on and check-in for a few minutes following the meeting, that would be appreciated. Past-President Julie RSVP'ed her absence, due to her hiking the Long Trail in the northeast US.

Speaking of the Board, congratulations to Gayle Knepper and Wes Clanton, our two elected Directors on the board!  We are thankful for your willingness to lend your wisdom, experience, and voices to the direction of the club. Cheers!

If I may stand on a Secretarial Soapbox for the moment (I'll fine myself), I wanted to share an important point of club business and after the news of the last few weeks, a realization I had.

President Sharon Durtka and Treasurer George Frushour carefully balanced out priorities and needs to provide a budget for the club to operate under.  It was a collaborative effort, I believe, and I thank them enormously for their work.  One of the major points is that while membership dues did not rise, people need to give happy bucks to make this budget work.  It isn't a huge amount per member per week - but the link needs to be clicked.  Most of the time when I claim "happy bucks" for bulletins, I get my wallet to do it- but sometimes I also forget.

In the past few weeks, it seemed like the news headlines were bad for everyone.  Regardless of nationality, demographic, or political leaning, it felt like everyone lost - there were no winners.  The hardest for me was how much anger seemed to come from everywhere.  In an evening of despairing for the lost kindness and rationality, I had this realization:

Twice a month, my Rotary club enables me to come together with people who want to do something good.  We've become odd friends of varied ages, experiences and political views. We give of ourselves to each other, we speak respectfully, and we don't let our differences split what is good.  That gives me a sense of hope.  So if our eClub format - though sometimes awkward - allows traveling people a community to meet with, I am happy to contribute towards that continuing.

Soapbox, descended.
