2017/2018 Service projects and a proposal: “One Well at a Time – the Ripple Effect”
The Board is thinking about what projects the club may take on for the next Rotary year. Some discussion is reflection on what we’ve done and tried - some is looking ahead to new projects. Being separated from one another, we are still considering how we approach Service: Individually, or with a local club? Hands-on, or financially? Common projects, or a diverse spread? If you have interest in being a part of this on-going discussion, let the board know!
President-Elect Sharon Durtka has brought forward a proposal for the drilling of a well in Olooseos, a Maasai village, in Kenya.
Bringing water to the village would change the lives of 1,500 people. With water closer than an 8 to 12 mile walk away, villagers would not expend so much time fetching needed water to sustain their lives. They would have the needed water to grow food in their gardens; they would have crops and cattle to sell; they would have money then to send their children in school (and would not need to have the children to help fetch water); clean water means health - less disease. “The One Well at a Time – the Ripple Effect” service project raises the standard of living, improves health care, gardens provide nutritious food, crops and cattle to sell that would provide the opportunity for education - especially for girls. The village has a plan for caring for and maintaining the well.
The proposal will be presented at a club meeting in February, and Sharon may be providing more information to membership ahead of that time.
